Summer is the season everyone looks forward to, but your hair? It's quietly dreading it.
Between UV exposure, saltwater, chlorine, humidity, heat styling and the general assault of hot weather, summer is one of the harshest seasons for your strands. And if your hair was already feeling a little fragile or sparse, the combination can make things visibly worse by September.
Here's how to go into the warm months with a proper plan.
The Four Summer Stressors You Need to Know
1. UV Radiation
The sun doesn't just damage your skin. UV rays break down the keratin structure in your hair, leaving it dry, brittle and prone to breakage. Light-coloured and chemically treated hair is especially vulnerable.
2. Saltwater and Chlorine
Both strip moisture from the hair shaft. Chlorine, in particular, disrupts the natural lipid layer that keeps hair smooth and protected, leaving it rough, tangled and weakened over time.
3. Humidity and Sweat
Moisture in the air causes the hair cuticle to swell and contract unpredictably, which leads to frizz and breakage. Add sweat at the scalp and you've got an environment that can irritate sensitive skin and cause build-up.
4. Overdoing Heat Styling
Ironically, many people use more heat in summer, to fight humidity, to get that perfect beach wave. But heat on already-stressed hair accelerates damage.
What to Actually Do
Rinse before you swim. Hair that's already saturated with clean water absorbs less chlorine or salt.
Use a UV-protective hair product. Look for leave-in conditioners or serums with UV filters. Even a light oil, argan or camellia, over the ends helps create a barrier.
Embrace air-drying. When heat isn't doing you any favours, skip the blow-dryer. Let your hair dry naturally and use that time for a scalp massage instead.
Protect your scalp. A wide-brimmed hat is your best friend. It shields both the scalp from UV exposure and the hair from direct sun, two problems solved at once.
Covering Summer Scalp Concerns Without Heavy Products
One challenge in summer: products that cover sparse areas or grey roots often feel heavy, sticky or sweaty in the heat. Many sprays and dyes melt or smudge in humidity, too.
That's where a waterproof, powder-based solution like Messy Hair has a real advantage. The mineral formula stays in place through heat and sweat, doesn't feel heavy on the scalp and washes out cleanly, no build-up, no nasty surprises at the pool.
Summer is for living. Your hair doesn't have to hold you back from any of it.
