Your Scalp Is a Skin. Start Treating It Like One.

Most people have a thoughtful skincare routine for their face. Cleanser, moisturiser, SPF, maybe a serum or two. They read ingredients, avoid things that irritate, and treat their skin with genuine care.

Then they wash their hair with a two-in-one shampoo and call it a day.

The scalp is skin. It has pores, oil glands, nerve endings and an active microbiome, much like the skin on your face. And the health of your scalp directly determines the quality of the hair that grows from it. Ignore the scalp, and you can use all the best hair products in the world without getting the results you want.

What a Healthy Scalp Actually Looks Like

A healthy scalp is clean, not overly oily or dry, free from significant flaking or irritation, and comfortable, no persistent itching, tightness or sensitivity. The hair grows from a strong, well-nourished follicle and sheds at a normal rate (roughly 50–100 strands per day). Anything outside that range is a signal worth paying attention to.

Common Scalp Issues and What They Mean

Flaking and dryness can indicate dehydration, an overly stripping shampoo, or a fungal imbalance. Switching to a gentler, sulphate-free shampoo and adding scalp oils can make a significant difference.

Excess oiliness often results from overstripping the scalp, washing too aggressively causes the sebaceous glands to overcompensate. Washing less frequently with a gentler product often helps more than washing more.

Irritation and redness are frequently caused by ingredients. Sulphates, fragrances, synthetic dyes and alcohols are common culprits. If you're experiencing this, start checking labels.

Tightness and itching are often early signs of an inflamed scalp, which, left unaddressed, can gradually affect hair follicle function.

Building a Scalp Routine

Cleanse appropriately. Sulphate-free shampoos are gentler and better for scalp balance. How often you wash should be based on your scalp's needs, not a fixed rule.

Massage regularly. Scalp massage, even 3–4 minutes a few times per week, improves blood circulation and has been shown in small studies to support hair growth over time. It also happens to feel wonderful.

Be selective about what you apply. Products that sit on the scalp all day should be chosen carefully. Look for formulas that don't clog follicles or leave residue.
